This spring, actor Jason Alexander, (who is best known for his role on the classic television sitcom Seinfeld), will be directing “The Last Five Years,” a musical love story written and composed by Jason Robert Brown. He recently discussed the show at a press conference in Syracuse, New York, where he talked with Michael Aaron Gallagher of StayFamous.Net about his directorial style (click here to read the full StayFamous.Net interview).
Jason Alexander opened the press conference by sharing the uniqueness of this project and how he received special permission from the playwright to make changes to the production, which included adding dancers to accompany the actors on stage.
Syracuse Stage artistic director Robert Hupp had previously worked with Alexander in Arkansas at the Arkansas Repertory Theatre and Hupp was looking for the right opportunity to share Jason’s unique talents with Syracuse audiences in his new role.
“The Last Five Years was added on to our season,” Hupp said. “It’s our 7th show of our 46th season.”
A musical about “love gained and love lost,” the play tells the story of a five-year relationship from both lover’s perspectives.
“I feel like we are in the perfect place to do it,” Alexander said on the first day of rehearsals. “There’s a great audience here. People support this theatre, both from the audience side and more importantly from a production side. So we’re pretty excited to dig in today.”
Following the press conference, Alexander joined a special meet and greet with the cast and crew.
“The Last Five Years” runs from May 29 – June 16. For ticket information for visit Syracuse Stage at www.syracusestage.org.
